Thinking of and supporting others

There is a lot happening in College over the next two weeks, which will support the College’s values. There is also lot of positive news to share with you and, of course, a lot of hard work in lessons over the next three weeks before the Easter break.

This week, on Thursday, is the Gilbert Hannam awards evening. Gilbert Hannamn was the founder of our College in 1672 – he set up a school in Midhurst for 12 protestant boys in order that they could be educated for free. This has developed over the last 346 years to the College you attend today – with over 1000 students. The Gilbert Hannam Education Foundation still supports the College and also owns part of the land the College is now situated on. The day and awards evening are both very important and traditional parts of our College calendar.

Next week is ‘Sports Relief’ and we will support this in College to raise money for this worthy cause. Charity work is essential and it is important that we work together to support others who need it. Supporting and helping others in our community and wider is important.

There were some highlights from the last week. We had a very successful quiz night which raised money for the MRC Parents Association, as well as a Year 12 UCAS information evening. Our Rotary Young Speakers also performed incredibly well in the district final, competing with other success schools from Surrey and South London. Well done to all and a particular thank you to Mr Kemp for working with the students to prepare them. Our Year 11 boys’ football team have reached the cup final which we hope to win and our Year 8 maths students came 10th in the Country in a competition on Thursday, which was World Maths Day.

Some terrific sports results last week – well done to all for participating and representing our College:

The year 7 girls indoor athletics team came 3rd in the County finals, a first for our school.

The year 8 netball team beat OSVA 19-0 and beat SPH 9-6. The ladies of the matches were Lucie Steele and Olwen Simpson.

The year 7 football team lost 2-1 to Bishop Luffa but beat OSVA 3-0.

Nell Whitby got through the county finals to now represent Sussex in the regional trampolining competition.

A couple of important reminders to everyone and some additional information. As I mentioned last week, if you have finished eating in the canteen we would ask that you leave the canteen to make space for others. Our canteen can seat 300 students and we have over 1000. Please support your friends by making space when you have finished eating. You will know that we are having some problems at the moment with our water fountains. These are being replaced and we have ordered new fountains for you to use which will arrive soon. The canteen are putting out jugs of water for you at break and lunch.

A final reminder about litter – it is your responsibility to take responsibility for your rubbish and make sure it goes int the bin. We must all work to keep our College tidy

 Have a good week
