Bursaries and Awards

Gilbert Hannam Education Foundation Bursaries

Up to five bursaries to the value of £750 are funded by the Foundation for students who have demonstrated both outstanding academic progress and have an outstanding attitude to learning at Key Stage 4 (based on GCSE and BTEC performance). The award is made at the end of the first term after entry to the sixth form.

Gilbert Hannam Educational Foundation Travel Bursaries

The Foundation travel bursaries are offered on the provision that travel plans have a significant educational or cultural benefit. Students prepare bids at the start of the academic year for presentation to the Foundation panel who announce the name or names of the successful applications at the annual Gilbert Hannam Day prize giving. The winners receive a grant to support their proposed trip.

The Hyman Travel Award

The Hyman Travel Award, which is administered by the Foundation, is a travel bursary made available since 2003 by David Hyman who was a boarder at Midhurst Grammar School in the 1940s and can be awarded for trips planned for France, Italy, Holland, Denmark or Israel.

The Lucas Travel Award

The Lucas Travel Award was made by the family of a former Head Teacher of Midhurst Grammar School, Norman Bernard Charles Lucas , known as "Luke" who was in office between 1937 and 1967.

Gilbert Hannam Education Foundation Award for most progress in Years 12 and 13.

At the end of Year 13, five students who have made the most academic progress (based on prior attainment not final examination results) are awarded a cheque for £100. The purpose of the award is to encourage all students to aim for targets beyond those expected of them.

The Gilbert Hannam Essay Competition

This competition was established by the trustees in 2011. The competition is open to all students in Years 10 and 11 and the winner is awarded a trophy and £100 prize. Students placed second and third receive commendation certificates along with £30 and £20 respectively. The trustees propose the essay theme in consultation with the College English Department. The winning entries are selected by the Trustees.
