CLiL 2022

As Assistant Principal at MRC, I am delighted to be starting our second CLiL class

What is CLiL? It means content & language integrated learning.  In addition to conventional MFL classes, one tutor group of year 7 students will learn through French, in some subject lessons, following the same curriculum, but working in the foreign language. Tutor time will also be conducted in French (outside of assemblies of course). Students do not need to have started French at primary school to be included in the class; they just need to be keen to learn!  We are currently planning the subjects for CLiL and the schemes of work in French with committed colleagues. CLiL students will still access most of the curriculum through English, so this will not be an elitist group separate from their peers. They will be in teaching groups for many subjects with other year 7 students.

CLiL teaching has been shown to accelerate progress in languages and across other subjects. It builds cultural understanding, self-confidence and concentration skills in learners. Willingness to listen, perseverance and resilience (when things are misunderstood) will be needed from students who take part. The students will become very used to hearing French, processing information and instructions, then to responding in French. It will become natural to do everyday things at school, just as in other lessons, but through a second language. We will teach to the highest standards of subject knowledge and promote excellent progress, just as we do in all lessons at the College. We anticipate the CLiL class being ready for GCSE French in the summer of year 9, although this plan will be reviewed for students, on an individual basis, as we reach that stage. Subjects offered through French may change over the three years, as staffing changes and/or we evaluate the needs of the students and the curriculum.

Any student offered a place for September 2022 can apply for a place in this tutor group.

Some students did not have the chance to participate in CLiL tasters, maybe one or more missed due to illness, lack of opportunity due to late place offers or other reasons. In view of this we would like to invite any interested students, even those who have applied, to another taster session on Wednesday 16 May from 4-5 pm. At the same time we will hold and information/Q and A session for parents/carers.

If you wish to join this session please register using the link below:

Application for the CLiL group can be made using this link :

It may be that we are over-subscribed for CLiL, so cannot provide a place in this one tutor group for every applicant. We are committed to excellent provision, with the most appropriate and committed staff, which means we do not have capacity to create an extra group. In this case, we would create the most balanced tutor group from the applications received. Parents will be notified about whether their child has been allocated a place in the CLiL tutor group by Friday 27 May 2022.
