Wider Opportunities

Sixth Form Council Representatives

Sixth Form students have many opportunities to take on positions of leadership and responsibility within the College and Sixth Form.  The Sixth Form Council will provide students with the chance to play their part in the running of the College.  It will include two representatives from each form group and will be responsible for many aspects of Sixth Form life such as:

  • Providing nominations for the post of Head Boy and Head Girl;
  • Charity Week, which raises a significant sum of money for the charities we support;
  • Social events - Sixth Formers organise a range of social events such as overnight trips to Paris, barbeques and other visits;
  • The Common Room.

The Sixth Form Council Representatives will be an integral part of the College Council which will deal with matters relating to the whole College and wider community.

Extra-curricular, enrichment and community opportunities

Sixth Form students are timetabled to be involved in an extra-curricular activity on Wednesday afternoons.  Attendance is required as it will result in a qualification at the end of the course.  Examples of the activities include the Junior Sports Leaders Award, the College Mentoring Programme, volunteering, the Extended Project Qualification, Young Enterprise Qualification or work experience.

Young Applicants in Schools and Colleges Scheme

The Open University's Young Applicants in Schools and Colleges Scheme (YASS) enables academically gifted students in Years 12 and 13 to study a wide range of undergraduate modules at first-year level alongside their AS and A Levels.  This highly successful and respected scheme gives students the opportunity to study at university standard, encourages independent learning, builds confidence and has the added bonus of differentiating them from other students when it comes to applying to traditional universities.

Travel Bursaries

We are very fortunate to be able to offer two travel bursaries allowing students the opportunity to mix travel and education.  Students prepare bids early in the academic year and two financial awards are made following a panel decision.

  • Groups (of up to four) could receive up to £500 to support their visit;
  • Two awards are made to fund a cultural visit to a place of the students' choice.  Visits have included those to major European cities, museums, sites of cultural or historic importance and art galleries;
  • The Lucas Bequest can fund trips anywhere in the world which meets the criteria;
  • The Hyman Bursary will fund trips to France and/or Italy, Holland and/or Denmark and Israel.
