Water Design Challenge
A team of 9 outstanding young designers from Year 7 were runners up in the Water Design Challenge Final at Bewl Water. The competition sponsored by Southern Water and The Design Council challenged students to investigate the issues surrounding water use in the South and design a means of informing the public and so reducing the amount of water we consume. The challenge saw designer Nick Hopper a Bognor based architect working with the students to help them investigate how much water their school uses and where they are wasting it. He gave expert guidance on how to develop practical water saving solutions using innovative design techniques to reduce the school’s water use. Their design for Aqua Saver, a water monitor that links to a water meter and a mobile phone application, which allows householder to monitor their water use and the cost of it at anytime from anywhere. The app also contains fun games for the younger members of the family. At the final the students had 15 minutes to pitch their idea to a panel of judges. The judges thought their pitch was excellent and their idea very ambitious. They have come away with a prize for the school of £2500 to either further develop their idea or spend on water saving in the school. The effort the team put into the challenge was incredible.
