Careers

Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) programmes make a major contribution in preparing young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences that life demands.
A planned progressive programme of activities across all years in the College supports students in choosing 14 – 19 pathways that suit their interests and abilities and help them to follow a career path and sustain employability throughout their working lives. Midhurst Rother College is committed to providing a CEIAG programme for all students in years 7 – 13. 
Midhurst Rother College’s Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Policy has the following aims:

• to contribute to strategies for raising achievement, especially by increasing motivation; 
• to support inclusion, challenge stereotyping and promote equality of opportunity;
• to encourage participation in continued learning including higher education and further education;
• to develop enterprise and employment skills;
• to reduce drop out from and course switching in education and training;
• to contribute to the economic prosperity of individuals and communities;
• to meet the needs of all our students through appropriate differentiation;
• to focus students on their future aspirations;
• to involve parents and carers.

Work Experience

We can see the value in learning through experience and as such offer work placements for students in Year 12 which currently takes place in the summer term. Students, with parental assistance, are expected to source the placements themselves, providing them with a first-hand experience of searching for employment.

For some students work experience is an opportunity to gain experience of working within their chosen career, these placements can often be difficult to source. The College is able to guide students with their placement choices; we encourage students to find placements that develop the key business skills that can prove invaluable to work applications in the future. Students in Year 12  are expected to find placements that provide skills that can be utilised to enhance their personal statement for university or work applications. 

Students are given training on skills for the working world in the run up to their work experience placement – these include health and safety, punctuality and attitude to work. Students are usually visited by a member of staff during the week and they are also given a work experience booklet for completion during the placement.

We pride ourselves in building a positive working relationship with placement providers, most are visited personally by our Careers Co-ordinator before students attend their placements.  This ensures the College has a good understanding of the placement, the environment and enables us to assess any possible risks associated with the student’s placement.
What can students do?  
Use the U-Explore website to look at possible careers choices.  Talk to adults about the different jobs they do.  Talk to your teachers about qualifications and career progression.
What can parents/carers do to support?  
Talk to your child about possible career choices, the skills they will need in the work place, career progression and so on.  Encourage your child to find a placement independently.
